OODUA PROGRESSIVE UNION WORLDWIDE
Delivered on behalf of the Global Convener by Alhaji (Amb.)Luqman A.Adedire Secretary General Worldwide Oodua Progressive Union On the Occasion of the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) Canada Date: Friday, 31 July 2026 Venue: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Esteemed members of Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) Canada, members of OPU from North America and other countries here present, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted to stand before you today as we gather to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Oodua Progressive Union in Canada.
This milestone is not merely a marker of time but a testament to the unwavering commitment, resilience, and unity of Yoruba sons and daughters in Canada.
It is a celebration of a shared heritage, our collective progress, and the bright future that lies ahead for the Yoruba people worldwide. I must use this opportunity to remind you all that beyond Canada, OPU which started years ago as a novel idea, has now spread to 104 countries across the world, and it is waxing stronger.
PROMOTING UNITY AMONG YORUBA PEOPLE
At the heart of OPU’s mission is the sacred duty to promote unity among Yoruba people, wherever they may be. Unity is the foundation upon which our culture, traditions, and values stand firm. It is the bond that connects us across continents, languages, and generations.
In a world that often seeks to divide, OPU Canada has stood as a beacon of solidarity, reminding us all that our strength lies in our togetherness.
The Yoruba people have a rich history of collaboration and mutual support, and OPU Canada has exemplified this spirit by fostering an environment where every member feels valued and heard.
Through your collective efforts, you have created a vibrant community that celebrates our identity and works tirelessly to preserve our cultural heritage.
STEADY GROWTH, VISIBLE IMPACT
Over the past decade, OPU Canada has witnessed remarkable progress, a progress that is the direct result of the dedication and hard work of its members.
Your initiatives have not only strengthened the bonds within the Yoruba community in Canada but have also enhanced the visibility and influence of Yoruba culture on the global stage.
I commend you for your effective membership mobilisation strategies that have brought together Yoruba people from diverse backgrounds and professions.
This inclusiveness has enriched the union, making it a dynamic and representative body. Your ability to engage members actively in cultural, educational, and social programmes speaks volumes about your commitment to the ideals of OPU.As a global organization committed to promoting the unity, progress, peace, security, and development of Yorubaland and Nigeria, OPU Worldwide remains steadfast in supporting initiatives that foster public safety, responsible governance, and sustainable community development.
OPU CANADA’s YORUBA SCHOOL: A WORTHY INITIATIVE
At this juncture, I want to salute members of OPU Canada for one of your most commendable achievements - that is the establishment and successful running of the Yoruba School.
This institution is a vital pillar in the preservation and promotion of our language and culture among the younger generation. Language is the soul of any culture, and by teaching Yoruba to our children and youth, you are ensuring that our rich heritage is not lost, but flourishes in the diaspora.
The Yoruba School is more than just an educational institution; it is a cultural sanctuary where our traditions, values, and history are passed down with pride and authenticity.
I salute all those involved in this noble endeavour – the teachers, administrators, parents, and students – for their dedication and passion.
SUPPORT FOR OPU NORTH AMERICA AND OTHER CONTINENTAL PROGRAMMES
I must mention that your support for OPU North America has been exemplary. By collaborating with other chapters and participating actively in continental initiatives, OPU Canada has demonstrated leadership and a commitment to the broader Yoruba cause.
The successful hosting of the last OPU Summit is a testament to your organisational capacity, hospitality, and vision.
The summit brought together Yoruba leaders and scholars from across the globe to deliberate on a critical issue affecting our people back home - insecurity, and to chart a course for our collective advancement.
OPU Canada’s role in making this event a success has not gone unnoticed, and it has definitely set a high standard for future gatherings.
As we celebrate this momentous 10th anniversary, let me also take this moment to pause and paying glowing tributes to the Late Iya Oodua.
Today, we remember and honour the late Iya Oodua, a woman whose life was a shining example of dedication to the ideals of OPU. Her commitment to the Yoruba cause was unwavering, and her contributions left an indelible mark on the Yoruba community.
The befitting burial accorded to her by OPU Canada and the entire Yoruba nation reflects the deep respect and love we have for her. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by our elders and the responsibility we bear to continue their legacy with honour and integrity.
CONCLUSION
As we mark this 10th anniversary, let us renew our commitment to the principles that have guided OPU Canada – unity, cultural preservation, education, and community development. Let us continue to work together to build a stronger, more vibrant Yoruba community in Canada and beyond.
I urge every member to remain active, to support the Yoruba School, to participate in OPU North America initiatives, and to uphold the values that have made this union a beacon of hope and progress.
Together, we can ensure that the Yoruba people remain united, proud, and prosperous for generations to come.
Thank you all for your attention.
Oodua a gbe wa o.
